Our purpose behind the "I love you handshape" or ILY in ASL products: A fundraising charity to Kendall School Division 2 Memorial Fund on Gallaudet University Campus. More information:
ILY in ASL (American Sign Language) is the universal symbol of the Deaf- we are proud to share our culture in a positive way! In Deaf culture, the ILY sign is used both as a friendly greeting and an informal goodbye gesture. The ILY sign is a widely recognized American Sign Language (ASL) sign that has gained popularity in majority culture in recent years after celebrities and others have adopted the sign in the limelight. It is an inclusive sign used by a diverse group of people who identify in ASL community. Fun fact: ASL has become one of the most popular language classes, ranking third in the U.S.
Our magnets and decals came to fruition when thinking about how to proudly show off our pride for Deafness and the Deaf community while simultaneously raising awareness for the community we come from. Our products can be placed virtually anywhere, from windows, cars and refrigerators, to electronics and other items. When wearing our t-shirt out in public, we are silently educating others about both our existence as Deaf individuals and allies, as well as our rich language. Think of it as a conversation starter!
"As long as we have deaf people on earth, we will have signs. And as long as we have our films, we can preserve signs in their old purity. It is my hope that we will all love and guard our beautiful sign language as the noblest gift God has given to deaf people."—George Veditz, 1913.
